Hindu festivals follow the lunisolar calendar, so exact dates and start times can vary slightly by region and by which Panchang (almanac) is followed. Understanding Auspicious Days
A few recurring lunar-calendar concepts that often come up when planning a pooja:
Ekadashi
The 11th day of each lunar fortnight (occurring twice a month), widely considered auspicious for fasting and worship of Vishnu.
Purnima
The full moon day of each lunar month — associated with several major festivals and considered favorable for many poojas.
Amavasya
The new moon day — traditionally set aside for ancestor worship (Pitru Puja) and specific rituals rather than celebratory events.
Pradosham
Occurs twice a month, in the evening twilight period before the 13th lunar day — considered especially auspicious for Shiva worship.
Know Your Raasi
In Vedic tradition, your Raasi (Chandra Rashi, or Moon sign) is determined by the exact position of the Moon at the time of your birth — it is not the same as a Western sun sign based only on your birth date, and can't be looked up from a simple date table. Determining your accurate Raasi requires your birth date, time, and place. We don't offer astrology consultations on Eshwara, so if you'd like your exact Raasi calculated, we'd recommend consulting a family astrologer or a dedicated Jyotish service.
